An earthen tortilla wrapped up
In a wooden sleeping bag
A micro-expression betrays that
I am feeling sad
Branches assembled in a tent
Filled with embers
Though the fire goes out
The light is remembered
A delicate tourniquet
Hurts a bit
But keeps us from sleep
The sticky gauze, gives us pause
We sigh because
The wound is too deep
And I don’t want to sleep quite yet
I might just forget to forget
I heard your voice calling from the clouds
But the sky opened up
The sky opened up
And you were not there
The canvas starts melting
As it mocks our behavior
The colors we taste
Are the ones we don’t savor
A tree filled with stones
Just waiting to fall
You stood underneath
When I felt too small
A tightened string is everything
We need to sing
So hand me a verse
I’ll play for you, as lovers do
It’s nothing new
But it could be worse
And I don’t want to sleep quite yet
I might just forget to forget
I heard your voice calling from the clouds
But the sky opened up
The sky opened up
And you were not there

She walked into a garden in September
The pain of life so heavy on her brow
Her last smile she could not even remember
And she took the shortest breaths her lungs allowed
A teardrop slowly creeping down her visage
The trees and flowers wept in harmony
She had no bottle to send out her message
And her ship had long since shattered in the sea
Time is standing still, but you move forward
Outside of space, you've got no place to go
And your molecules are nestled
In this ordinary vessel
With no compass, your sunshine turns to snow
October came and saw the leaves all withered
A dying ember painted orange and brown
But a voice cried out, "My love, you must come hither,"
"Hold onto me and I won't let you drown."
Time is standing still, but we move forward
Outside of space, we’ve got no place to go
And our molecules are nestled
In these ordinary vessels
With no compass, our sunshine turns to snow
With no compass, our sunshine turns to snow

Waves (Live - May 2019)

If I was a sun alone in the sky
With distant planets floating by
I would yearn for contact though my
Light would blind their eyes
But there is one gift I’d give
That might help them all to live
My particles of photons may
Propagate the skies
I’d send them waves
Send them waves
Send them waves
I’d send them waves
If I was the ocean vast and deep blue
I may never run into you
But my ripples you might feel
As you dip in a toe or two
And the sand on the land may band together
Forming a castle that wouldn’t last well
But as you stroll on the beach I might reach you
With my lapping waves of blue
I’d send you waves
Send you waves
Send you waves
I’d send you waves
If I was a child so quite beguiled
On my first bus ride to school
Rusty lunchbox and favorite socks
Pulled up to my ears
I’d look outside the window
At your face dripping with tears
I’d reach my tiny hand up
Assuaging all your fears
I’d send you waves
Send you waves
Send you waves
I’d send you waves

A rusty lunchbox still will hold an apple
A squeaky door still closes out the noise
A dammed brook still finds the will to babble
A child still loves her broken toys
I've traveled through the thickets and the fire
I've given up my soul for skies of blue
But your eyes still hold a deep desire
I am broken but I am whole to you
I am broken but I am whole to you
An inferno is born from dying embers
A prisoner may see a beam of sun
A dying man still loves who he remembers
Even as he knows his story’s almost done
I've traveled through the thickets and the fire
I've given up my soul for skies of blue
But your eyes still hold a deep desire
I am broken but I am whole to you
I am broken but I am whole to you
The scars form a jagged cartograph
The bruises are deep friends from long ago
But it’s early to write my epitaph
You’ve found my quiet sunshine in the snow
For the wilted flower feeds the earth its flesh
A nova makes way for stars anew
And as the cosmic dust will coalesce
So will my soul be channeled into you
I've traveled through the thickets and the fire
I've given up my soul for skies of blue
But your eyes still hold a deep desire
I am broken but I am whole to you
I’m not broken, I’m in pieces for you

We see dead stars still shine their light
To give us peace through caustic night
These shells decay and we take flight
Eternal sky, our souls requite
I’m not ready for the end
The lights come up but eyes grow dim
I’m not ready for the end
But I’m not ready to begin
Wizened creatures, shriveled skin
Binary stars lose their twin
Mortality, life’s greatest sin
Yet fossils foster life again
Brief your sojourn, short your song
Melodies won’t linger long
Chords unwrapped in screaming sighs
But love, keep breathing through our sky
Love, keep breathing through our sky
Love, keep breathing through our sky

You were the hologram
That my hand just slipped through
You were the followed lamb
But the shepherds lost you
You were the poem, the nightmare, the flake of snow
That melted as soon as it formed
You were the pentagram
But my devil’s the storm
You were the mirror
That distorted my face
You made me see clearer
I’d fallen from grace
You were a thousand tiny embers
That could never keep me warm
You were the raindrop
But my devil’s the storm
You were the jester
When I was locked in the tower
While I was sequestered
You would tunnel for hours
And you broke the bricks of my prison
With your shank forged from a spoon
You lit up the sky
While I turned off the moon
Now wax from the candles
Has erased these five points
But my soul is a scandal
That no priest could anoint
And the rag of my penance is drenched
With the scent of your heart’s chloroform
I tricked your angels
To get lost in my storm
You were the seraph
When my devil was born
But I built us a shelter
Now come out of the storm
